What is Valeriana officinalis?

Valerian is a hardy perennial flowering plant with sweet-smelling pink or white flowers. The name Valerian means “to be strong or healthy” in Latin. Valerian is a plant native to Europe, South Africa, and parts of Asia. It grows to up to four feet high and has trumpet-shaped flowers. The roots are used medicinally. Valerian extract has been used for centuries as a perfume and as a mild, relaxing sedative. Valerian has been used as a medicinal herb since at least the time of ancient Greece and Rome.

Standardized Valerian extract, a safe and effective natural sedative, calms both mind and body. Clinical research demonstrates that Valerian effectively relieves anxiety-related insomnia and suggests that Valerian extract may be comparable to some prescription anti-anxiety drugs for relieving anxiety. Unlike many drugs, however, Valerian is not addictive or habit- forming when taken in recommended doses.
